For' this afternoon at the Lyceum Theatre at 5.15 p.m., the Conductor of the Shanghai Municipal Orchestra, instead of the usual symphonic concert, has prepared a special performance of sacred music in view of the following Easter week.
It should be a truly great musical event, for which Maestro Paci has secured the collaboration of five soloists and of the Shanghai Choral Society (80 voices strong).
Of the soloists, three are the distinguished Shanghai vocalists—-Mrs. A. Harvey, soprano, Mrs. P. D. C. Gain, alto, and Mr. J. C. Booth, baritone—while the other two are the well-known professional singers, Mr. P. A. Markoff and Mr. V. Shushlin, tenor and bass respectively.
Never before have five singers of this class been-heard in Shanghai at one concert, and their singing supported by the large and well-trained chorus of the Shanghai Choral Society and by the full Municipal Orchestra, will certainly be a great treat, The two sacred works chosen are "The Death of the Redeemer" by Don Lorenzo Peroti, already performed in previous years in Shanghai with remarkable success; and the famous "Stabat Mater", by Dvorak, which will be heard for the first time in Shanghai in its complete and original orchestral setting.
After the tragic music of Don Lorenzo Perosi illustrating. the Crucifixion of the Redeemer and concluding with the famous sobbing melody on the Christ's last words: "Doi, doi lamina sabactani...." the singing of the "Stabat Mater dolorosa" poem, divided in solos, duets, quartets and choruses, should make the performance a most impressive one, deeply moving both for its religious and musical significante.
The admission prices, although altered for certain rows of the balcony and stalls, have been kept very low considering the great amount of work and extra expense incurred for the production of this special performance. Seats in the Balcony will be at $210, while all the stalls (numbered) will be at $130.
The detailed programme follows:
The SV.C. will march in two columns; the Corps H. Q., Cavalry, Band, Infantry and Corps Troops, will compose the first column,—while Armoured Cars, Engineers, and Services will be in the Mechanised Units column. The troops will be assembled by 2.30 pin. at the Race Club and will give general salute to the Corps Colour when it arrives on parade. The Russian Detachment is to march from billets to the Race Club with their Regimental Colour via Bund Foochow Road, Vu Ya Ching Road, Racecourse Road and the Mohawk Road, joining the rest of the troops on the racecourse.
