Battle Stops

Meanwhile, after 75 hours of fighting the Republicans ceased to attack the Nationalist bridge-head at Balaguer. They had advanced over the battlefield, strewn with corpses, several times with as many as forty camouflaged tanks. The Nationalists waited, however, until they were within 100 yards when they opened fire with the deadly anti-tank gun, one of the most effective weapons of war. This battle has been hard and concentrated and the losses on both sides have been very high.—Reuter, Berlin, Apr. 17 According to well-informed circles here, the administrative capital of Austria may be transferred to Linz, while Vienna will remain the "sentimental" capital.

These circles pointed out that over 100000 Jews are living in Vienna, and the ousting of these Jews will take a.long.time despite the recent declarations made by Field-Marshal Hermann Goering, the Reich Air Minister.

Another reason is Herr Hitler's unpleasant reminiscences of Vienna where he stayed during his youth.

The Fuehrer applied for entrance into the Beaux-Arts Academy but was refused. He finally took to house painting to earn a living. The fact that he shortened his stay in the Austrian capital following the Anschluss was widely noticed and commented upon.

A significant point is that the most important decrees on the Austro-German Anschluss were signed in Linz, where the final proclamation of the Anschluss was also made.—Havas.
