Admiral Issues Correction to Japanese Statement In connection with Americans living in the Yangtze Valley, the Commander-in-chief of the U.S. Asiatic Fleet, last night issued the following:
"The statement mae in the local press of September 23 by the Japanese naval spokesman that the Jepanese authorities were informed by Mr. Nelson T. Johnson, Ame: ican Amhassador to China, early this month that evacuation of foreigners from Hankow and the surrounding areas would be completed by noon, September 26, is entirely in error as no such information was ever given out by the Ambassador?
"There were negotiations with the Japanese authorities, to withhold bombing of the Canton-Hankow Railway until September 26 to permit three small parties of Americans to reach Canton in safety. Notice was given at the time, however, that there would be other parties to follow.
"There are ju the Yangtze Valley several thousand foreigners, 1,000 of whom are Americans, Many of these people will wish to leave China in the course of time and it is imperative that a safe route to reach one of the seaports from he Yangtze Valley be agreed upon."
