East of North Station

There was considerable machine-Leun and hand-to-hand fighting east of the North Station. Chinese troops, advancing quietly during the night, surprised ihe Japanese in occupation of the Chinese houses to ihe north of Range Road between North Szechten and North Kiangse Roads, the spokesman said. Fuseng Road and Haskell Road, two narrow streets which end on Range Road, were held by the Japanese with several machine-guns. Chinese soldiersavoided these machine-guns, and by breaking through some of the nearby houses, reached the rear of the Japanese machine-gunners. A few hand-grenades followed by machinegunning killed a number of the Japanese, the rest escaped. Japanese attempts to enter Chapei by way of Paoshing Road proved costly and fruitless, the spokesman said.
