Exporis from Shanghai fall naturally into two main categories, "local" and "foreign." While the latter are fairly evenly divided, on a quota Basis, among the various lines, the major portion of the "local" export trade is being handled by the British ahd the Netherlands shipping compenies—such as the P.& O, Blue Tunnel Line, Glen and Shire lines, Prince and Silver Lines, Ellerman Line, Java-China-Japan Line, Hol-lend East-Asia and the K.P.M.
This is not unusual of course, since the Italian and the German lines have tended to concentrate on European cargoes only, whereas the cther companies have always catered to the "local" trade, but the fact may be of interest to the layman who sees ships of many nationalities sailing in and out of port"and wonders what cargoes they carry, Japan-@se vessels passing through on, the way to Europe carry little or no China cargo, as might be expected.
