Smizvukr Edamatsu, staff correspondent of the "Osaka Mainichi and Tokyo Nichi Nichi" describing Shanghai after the withdrawal of the Chinese from its environs says:—
The stores (in Hongkew) selling "Bomb Cakes" and "Bayonet Charge Rice" have appeared, attracting many customers, mostly Japanese soldiers and bluejackets...
Freed from the Chinese bombing and bombardment, foreign residents and Chinese appear happy. It seems that the completion of the siege of Shanghai has also brought a brighter atmosphere to the International Settlement across Soochow Creek.
The Sincere and other leading department stores are busy selling winter goods, while Chinese girls in their colourful native costumes are seen leisurely gazing at show-windows.
The Srand, Metropole. and other movie theaters are now filled with joyous audiences.
But surely, the big department stores were in operation much earlier than the Chinese withdrawal, while the happy faces of the joyous audiences at the cinemas have provided the one bright spot in our otherwise very dull existence.
