Special Reservations

Kiska, in the Aleutians, is one of six ports which the government has closed to foreign shipping in that región. In fact, all the Aleutian Islands lying west of Meridian 167 are officially declared an "air s reservation" over which commercial flying by any nation is prohibited for reasons of "public safety."

All the Aleutians also were recently charted by a special navy expedition and a submarine squadron spent much time in that region ostensibly exploring coves and poteütial operating bases.

The strategic significance of the region is believed to be due to its proximity to~the "Great Circle" route of trading vessels which operate between Asia and North America. It is also much closer to Asia than any part of mainland United States.

Oficials indicated that the naval manguvres will spread all over the region named and end with a "critique" at Hawaii late in April—United Press.
