Guerillas Flood Communications Dykes Opened Behind the

Japanese Lines; Lorries — Stopped Near Peiping

Peiping, July 18.

The policy of flooding Japanese Occupied territory is now being carried out behind the Japanese lines.

A band of guerillas has destroyed the south dyke of the Yungting River, about 20 miles north-west of Tientsin, seriously flooding large lowlying areas west of Tientsin.

it is expected, however, that the Japanese will be able to repair the dyke before Tientsin is seriously threatened, Heavy rains in north-west China are causing the Yellow River to flood north Honan, while the floods are deepening in the Kaifeng area.

Japanese troops are strengthening the protective dyke around the city walls and are packing sandbags around the walls themselves, in case the dyke caves in. Kaifeng is still dry, but the flood: now extends 25 miles east of the city.

Guerilla bands are also blocking the Peiping-Tientsin highway.

A foreign truck, flying an American flag, was recently allowed to return to Peiping unmolested, but two Japanese army trucks, with hand grenades, were found with the drivers dead. side by side.

The American driver was told that any "Germans, Italians or Japanese will be similarly blown up."—Reuter.
