To the Editor of the "NoRrz-CHINA Dairy News"
Sm,—I read so many letters in the "North-China Daily News" where foreigners writing, very often ask the question "What are the wealthy Chinese doing for the Refugees?"
One day I had a letter from one of the great Hospital Matrons of England asking me to call on a Miss Lilliam Woo, one of China's foremost. nurses, The other day I did so and found her in charge of a children's hospital on Avenue Haig. A large house with lovely lawns and trees, has been converted into a hospital. it is painted white inside from top to bottom and in equipment and arrangement will stand comparison with any place at home. Miss Woo is assisted by a staff of young Chinese nurses and doctors.
The house is full from top to bottom with tragic relics of such a catastrophe as the world has never known, mothers and fathers killed, or separated from their children when villages are burned and bombed, and babies born by the wayside when the mothers are fleeing towards Shanghai. These children have been rescued by a young Chinese gentleman Mr. T. C. Pan, helped by a few of his friends, and are being taken care of, fed and nourished. Many of the babies are like famine babies due 1 to the wundernourishment of the mothers and to the horror and fear and misery which was experienced in the pre-natal period. Others are suffering from tuberculosis, typhoid and pneumonia, but, all are receiving skilled care and attention.
It takes thousands of dollars to keep this place up every month, and the burden of upkeep rests entirely on Mr. Pan though his friends sometimes help.
Had I not visited Miss Woo I would from 1 to 114 and I noticed that he haa only one problem wrong, this was a three mover. I wonder if it could possibly be a Shanghai or a world record? I also gather that it took him over two continuous years to accomplish this feat.
There are a good number of people in Shanghai who play Chess and would like to suggest that th" N.C.D.N. offer as an inducement (say) a 3 or 6 months free subscription to the one who has the greatest number of solutions correct from a given number of problems.
A fixed date and time should be specified in which to send in the solutions, by this scheme it may attract even the senior players to test their skill in this department of the game and at the same time to compete for the honour of having one's name announced i your esteemed paper as the winner of this competition.
Should you decide to give the above suggestion a trial, I sincerely hope that you will not debar members of your staff from competing, providing they too must comply with the rules and conditions attached to the competition, i RFR.
