Su,—We in Shanghai are for-1 tunate in having most of our streets lined with trees, but once planted, do they get all the attention they should?
Down Rockhill Avenue and other outlying roads cinders are dumped regularly for road repairs. Invariably the coolies empty the cinders at the base of the trees instead of on empty spaces between them. In no time.a tree which has been standing for six to seven years withers. This has been the fate of many a lovely tree in Rockhill Avenue, as the empty spaces will prove, Often when roads in the French Concession and International Settlement are being repaired I have noticed that the steam-roller is permitted to stand right under a large shady tree. This tree was planted to provide shade to the public, but the purpose is defeated, because the man who runs the steam-roller keeps firing the machine and hot smoke and sparks are sent up continually into the "face" of the tree, which Has been a thing of beauty for at least ten years. Can the tree survive such treatment? Invariably it dies. A big tree is costly to buy, but what a waste of something lovely!
Cannot the authorities prevent such a loss?
