The Kanze lamasery is the centre of what is known as the Hor States and there is still a young rative princess connected with the House of Konssar. This young lady is a crack sift and: the colonel of 500 Thetan militia. For months it was rumoured, should the Land of the Lamas con-
ünue to close her doors to her Spiritual Head, that possibly the chen Lama might take up his residence in Kanze. And just before his death, it was reported that a move was anticipated in that direc-ton Kanze is decidedly pro-Chinese but occupies a position on the fence in relation to Tibetan politics. If anything, she leans slightly towards the Dalai Lama, and probably the Panchen Lama knew this, hence his lack of desire to move towards Kanze. Had this step been taken sooner, before the Panchen let remorse take possession of his soul, his life might have been prolonged. At no time did he ever look forward to a return to China.
Drashe Lhumbo was his home, and during the absence of the Dalai Lama, he imagined a return was pos-
Disposal of Precious Body After the death of the Panchen Lama at Jyebundo his lama following seem 1o have taken control of pflairs, It appears that some of his own relatives were on hand and they apparently assumed control of the body. There seems, however. to have been some difference of opinion between the relatives of the Panchen end some of his high lamas, What, was to be done with this precious body and what was its future and final destination? Naturally the lamas in the retinue considered Lhasa the final authority and appealed there.
The Chinese part of the following regarded Nanking as the final an-{ thority and so awaited word from} there. Unfortunately Nanking was other-wise engaged and so the proceedings fell between two stools. Meantime another serious difference of opinion occurred regarding the embalming, what process should be followed? The Tibetans know something about embalming but whether uch persons were on hand when the Panchen died is not known.
Tu the Chinese retinue there was a foreign-trained "doctor, a graduate of an American university. Whether he "Was allowed a free hand or not is unknown. Some weeks after the death of the Panchen a special runner came to Tachienlu in search of the different ingredients for crabalming. They were informed, however, thay by the time they reached the procession carrying the body, it Would be too late. So it was left it et that.
The lama, usual lly a sane individual con on occasions become quite fanotical, and apparently a funeral, wedding or birth provide such occasions, There is much evidence to show, that some of the lamas and drabas, when the death of the Panchen was confirmed, simpliest their heads and went rather wild. It may have been grief, it may have been custom, it may "have been religion or it may have been frenzy. Reports coming to hand say the body was nog embalmed when the pro cession decided to start out for Kanze. Still retaining a sitting posture it w an merely wrapped up in cloth and the Weird procession started across central Asia in the direction of Kanze.
