Budge's Second Defeat In Two Weeks Hopman Gains Another Great ' Victory

Berkeley, Calif, Oct. 9

Harry Hopman, manager of the Australian Davis Cup team, followed up his recent sensational victory over Johnny Bromwich, Australian champion, by beating Donald Budge, the greatest tennis player in the world, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1, in the quarter-finals of the Pacific Coast men's singles series today.

The defeat proved to be Budge's second in two weeks, for the lanky Californian world champion lost to Adrian Quist last week in the Pacific Southwest championship tourney. Quist eventually beat Hopman for the title, which went to an Australian for the first time in history.
