Some anxiety is being felt concerning the whereabouts of Mr, Harold Porter, C.M.G., vice-chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Council. Friends of his towards the end of last week remarked that they had not seen him about, but paid no more than passing attention to the matter until enquiries were set afoot on Monday morning.
Mr. Porter, in the past, has been known to have taken trips into the hinterland without informing his relatives or friends, and it is still possible that he may have done so on this occasion, though the fact that he does not appear to have taken a bag with him, seems to offset the belief that he has done so on this occasion.
For some years past Mr. Porter's health has not been all it should have been, and it is feared that he may have broken down under the strain of the work imposed upon him as a result of the crisis. It is at present thought to be not unlikely that he may still be in Shanghai suffering from loss of memory.
