State-Aided Trade Hits Britain

Commons Informed of Totalitarian Method Fascists Pay More

London, Dec. 1.

An interesting side-light Was thrown on the trading methods of the totalitarian states by Mr. R. S. Hudson, Secretary for Overseas Trade, in the House of Commons yesterday.

Information on these methods was given in reply to a motion by Mr. Harold Sutcliffe, Conservative member for the Royton Division of Lancashire, asking for a planned export trade policy to assist industry, and "overcome the increasing menace of state-aided foreign competition."

Mr. Hudson stated that the Government had made a survey of all the possible ways of meeting totalitarian trading methods, especially in Central and South-Eastern Europe.

They had found that the only pos-, sible way was to organize industries so that they would be able to speak as units, and say to their opposite numbers' in Germany:—"Unless you are prepared to sell your goods for a Reasonable return, we will fight you.'

Fascists Must Pay More Mr. Hudson quoted figures to show how the totalitarian states paid to primary producers' in Central and South-Eastern Europe prices which were much higher than world prices, and said that by her methods Germany was destroying trade throughout the world, regards the point made by the Opposition regarding trade with Nationalist Spain, Mr. Hudson said:—"The number of German ships trading with Franco territory is increasing, because of the large quartity of munitions which the German Government is sending to General Franco."

At this point, members of the Opposition interrupted with cries of "Oh, stop."

In conclusion, Mr. Hudson said that Great Britain was stronger than the totalitarian states.

It was essential that her industries should be organized.

After an Opposition amendment had been defeated, the motion was talked out.—Reuter.
