Duke Unbeaten

The settlement of the bid was one of the quickest series of moves in the history of the annual classic. It is believed the players at Southern California took a straw vote, two-thirds of which showed the Trojans favoured facing Duke on January 1. This vote, it is believed, helped to clinch the bid for the Durham, N.C. squad.

Duke University went through a nine-game schedule unbeaten, untied and unscored upon, amassing one of the greatest defensive records in the history of modern football.

Although Duke has gained national recognition during the last decade, it was not until the advent of Coach Wallace Wade, who took four teams from Alabama University to the Rose Bowl, that the North Carolina school really gained national recognition. Last year, it was considered one of the nation's best until Pittsburgh knocked their hopes out from under them by inflicting a bitter 10-0 defeat in the final game of th¢ season.

It will be the first time that Duke. University has ever appeared in the Western classic, although Duke's Coach, Wallace W. Wade is as well-known in the West as the East because it was during his hey-day at the University of Alabama that the Crimson Tornado became one of the most feared teams in the country.
