A listing of the number of new buildings by the month in 1938 shows an amazing "boom" during the past four months as compared with the beginning of the year. The figures per month range front a minimum of 21 to a maximum of 636. Through the courtesy of the Commissioner of Public Works the monthly totals are given as follows:
January, 25; February, 21; Marc 80; April, 128; May 208; June, 19: July, 301; August, 548; September, 51 October, 305; and November, 636.
In the category of Chinese houses, the monthly figures range from three in January and February, each, to 379 in November. Factories range from eight to seventeen per month, not including alterations and additions.
Chinese houses converted into factories total 33, with eighteen items in this class being recorded in November.
