A, few weeks ago the Duke of Kent lost his 13-year-old' Alsatian, Dushka, which was Tail-Waggér R.28.
A letter of sympathy with His Royal Highness was sent by the Club and 1 now have the pleasure of announce: ing that the Chow Chow puppy bought to replace the departed favourite has also been enrolled as a member, his number being R.118.
There is a good deal of difference in appearance and temperament between these two breeds, but I know that the Duke has been very much devoted to Lady Milford Haven's Chow Chow, Micha, end it is mo: sible that the pleasing ways of this dog induced him to go to its breeder, Mrs. V. A. M. Mannooch, for a puppy for himself. The new puppy is three months old, which is a good age for it to find a new home, and it should have every opportunity of becoming attached to its royal master, who intends to shake it his own personal favourite. I understand, also, that this puppy is a fine example of it: kind, as. we should expect of one coming from Mrs. Mannooch's kennels. His sire, Eh. Choonam Hung Kwong, is a perfectly magnificent dog that was made the best of all exhibits at Mr, Cruft's Jubilee Show He has that wonderful leonine appearance that makes chows at their test so attractive, for they are more lion-like than any dog that I know. Choonam Hung Kwong has won innumerable prizes; and any owners of his stock may well be proud el their possession.
Chow Chows have many delightful qualities of disposition; some of them, I admit, are uncertain in their temper, but as a rule if they are left alone they are not fierce or aggressive. The majority are, one would not say friendly, but, at any rate. harmless. They become very devoted to their own particular: family and seem to ignore other people. I often used to meet one at the house of a friend, where he welcomed me with courtesy, but if I passed him-on one of his lonely walks and spoke to him by name. he would have nothing to say to me. on from the top end, and it was not long before the latter induced Fairbairn to an indiscretion for Read to collect with ease, Barton was the only member who faced the varied attack with a straight bat, and it was mainly through his patience that a procession was averted, The Score stood at only 31 afler an hour's play, with Booth and Graham, a slow bowler, tying the opposition in knots with accurate and deceptive deliveries, With the help of Edmunds, who played an unusually quiet innings for his nine runs, Barton was able to carry the score past the half-century yfiürk before being left alone, only to be disappointed by his skipper when the larier was caught out of his ground by Sinclai In making his useful contribution at the right time Woodley displayed more confidence than when he last appeared at the crease against the same bowlers, and the value (of his assistance was enlarged by Barton who was heartened into hitting Wood to the tapes twice, However, the latter broke through the defence a few minutes later, and with Abbott's dismissal the innings closed.
