There is not time to tell the story of the Authorized Version from which our lessons were read this evening. You all know that appearing in 1611 this version, the noblest] monument of English prose, became part of the nation's life-blood and in the words of historian Green "England became the people of a book, and that book was the Bible." The Authorized Version rooted itself in England like one of her own oaks, It moulded the nation's thought, and played no small part in giving us the freedom of which we are so justly proud. There has been no power at work in England comparable to the power of this book and no one can calculate what it has done for the education of the race. It has become part of our everyday speech, Here is a list of Biblical phrases cited from a recent volume: "Highways and hedges," "hip and thigh, rose as one man," "lick the dust, "a thorn in the flesh," "a broken reed," "The root of all evil" "Thej nether millstone," "The sweat of his brow," "heap coals of fire," "weighed and found wanting."
