Canton Food Supplies Return to Normal

Junks Bring Vegetables Commodities from Japan

Canton, Mar. 2.

After causing the authorities much worry in recent weeks, the food situation in Canton is once again normal as the result of a steady supply from the surrounding countryside and large shipments from Jepan and Formosa.

Recently allowed to resume sailings to inland points, Chinese junks now arrive regularly laden with livestock, fruits and vegetables for the rapidly growing population of the city. In addition, supplies of rice, flour, salt-fish, sugar, peanuts and other foodstuffs are pouring into the city from Japanese ports and Formosa.

Prices in general are still high, ton in order to sell rice cheaply to the poorer classes.—Reuter.
