London, Mar. 1.
Replying to a question by Mr. Robert Perkins, Conservative member for the Stroud Division of Gloucestershire, Captain H. H. Balfour, Under-Secretary of State for Air, declared in the House-of Commons today that he was not satisfied with the condition of ice prevention in the carburetters of British aero engines.
Imperial Airways and the Royal Aeronautical Establishment, he stated, were collaborating in experiments for the better development of such ice sharp. Five groups of detectives consisting of five Chinese and one foreign detective each were also waiting on the scene and in ce-operation with the members of the Reserve Unit commenced a minute search of the hotel, the contents of every room being carefully investigated whilst all persons met within the hotel, were searched from head to foot.
Thousands Watch Notwithstanding the rain, thousands ai Chinese civilians had crowded the near by streets, presumably under the impression that another terrorist attack had been perpetrated.
It appears that the hotel had been a hide-out for criminals for many months and, as will be recalled, two detectives were wounded by gunmen on February 15, when they attempted to make the arrests of three men, whom the police believed to have been concerned in the $30,000 armed robbery perpetrated in a Chinese coal hong on Sinza Road some time ago. The men at the time managed to escape, but were eventually arrested a few days ago having appeared in court on February 25, when they were remanded in custody pending detailed investigations.
Last nights raiding parties also carefully searched all vehicles in the vicinity but here too, nothing was found which would have warranted an arrest or a seizure.
This is the third important raid carried out by the Shanghai Municipal Police since February 23, and the very fact that none of the previous raids have resulted in any arrests seems to indicate that the criminal element has chosen safer hide-outs elsewhere, the large decrease in the number of armed robberies and terrorist attacks since then confirming this theory.
It could not be learned whether or not additional raids would be staged in the Settlement in the near future, although this is not held improbable.
The largest and most sensational raid ever to have been staged in Shanghai, was made on February 23, when, it will be recalled some 750 men from the British, Italian and Japanese forces as well as the Shanghai Municipal police searched an area near Jessfield Park where 300 huts were carefully combed as the district was believed to have been used as a hide-out by gunmen.
In the second biggest raid within the last few days, a large number of police and volunteers the Oriental Hotel on Nanking Road and made a room to room search, whilst the roof-garden came in for Empress of Japan Gives Birth to attention. "Mr. Kurahei Yuasa, Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal;. Mr. Tsuno: Matsudaira, Minister of the Imperial Household, and other statesmen waited in an adjoining room.
An atmosphere of tense expectation Meanwhile, the extensive closing off of "Ta Tao" territory with barbed wire barricades, is nearing completion and will, it is hoped, prevent any undesired elements from entering the Settlement from these territories.
