Shawnee-On-The-Delaware, July 10.
Harry Cooper turned in a card of 67, five below par and only one stroke above the competitive course record, to lead the cream of the country's golfers in the first round of the Professional Golf Association's championship.
Frank Moore, a newcomer, scored 68 while Henry Picard, Teri Johnson, another new face, and Sam Snead scored 69.
A total of seventeen golfers bettered par, while six others equalled par.
All prominent golfers turned in cards with scores within the 77-mark or even better, which indicated that 150 would be sufficient to place the men into the qualifying round.
Cooper gave a grand exhibition, driving accurately for good length. His putting was deadly and he scored seven birdies. He only exceeded par two holes.
Ralph Guldaih, national open champion, Paul Runyan, Dave Metz and Marvin Stahl scored 70 each.
Guldalh, who' has not played this course for four years, arrived here only one hour before the start of play Gene Sarazen registered 72, while Denny Shute and Johnny Revolta made 74.
Shute is the defending champion, having won the title for the past two years—United Press.
