Rome, July 29.
The two foreign correspondents, Mr. Cremona of the Christian Science Monitor, and Dr. Kleinlehrer of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, whose expulsion was recently decreed, left Rome last night for France and London respectively.
According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Mr. William Phillips, U.S. Ambassador in Rome, called on Count Ciano, Foreign Minister, yesterday evening, and made friendly enquiry on behalf of the United States Government with regard to the meaning of the present anti-Jewish campaign in Italy.
Mr. Phillips, it is understood, recalled that Count Ciano had previously assured him there was room in Italy for anti-Semitism.
Mr. Phillips said that he was seeking a similar assurance now.
Count Ciano is understood to have replied that the.racial problem was being studied and it was too early to say to what extent it would affect the Jews in Italy, but it was principally aimed at preserving Italian racial purity in connection with Ttaly's imperial racial policy.—Reuter.
