Us. V, Lloyd Patterson

Before Judge Milton J. Hetmick a reversed judgment Lloyd. Patierton was sentenced to a year and a day in McNeill's Island, Federal Penitentiary near Seattle, on Monday morning in the United States Court for China by Judge Milton J. Helmick. Originally, Judge Helmick had pronounced sentence on Patterson of six months in Ward Road fol, but Patterson asked to be sent to MeNeil's instead. He was the defendant on a charge of cashing. false cheques and for attempted escape from the custody of the police, Patterson waived atrial.

He stated his reason for not preferring Island instead that at Ward Road there was no employment for prisoners, whereas at, MeNeill's there was.

"Men there," he said, ina statement to Judge Helmick, run fogged from having nothing to do. From six in the morning until el at aight we just sit around and nothing. Only one hour a day is given us for exercise.

Patterson was charged with cashing five cheques which were not honour ed by the bank. He was taken into custody on May 26 and while being taken by the police from Chengl Road to Ward Road gaol he asked it he could go into Jimmy's Broadway establishment to get some food. The officers assented. While in there Patterson made an attempt to escape.

"It was impulse on my part" he said on Monday. "I know it was wrong, but T did it on the spur of the moment."

"Your attempt to escape," Judge Helmick said later, in summing up, is quite understandable."
