Praiseworthy devotion to duty and' outstanding courage was shown cly, the Chinese constables who were with the late Mr, E, M, Slater when he. met his dearn in the attempt to apprehend a gang of armed robbers on New Year's eve. Further example of this quality of heroism has been forthcoming this week. The un~ successful but daring attempt of robbers to seize money belonging to the Kiangsu bank. was folled partly by the stout resistance of the Chinese. watchman who opened fire on the farmed desperadoes but was.nfortunately killed and of the guards who, though' wounded, managed to- drive off the robbers and so enabled the money to be safely handed over to the bank, "Now a foreign revenue Inspector" of the Municipal Council, Mr. G. A. Vurm, joining in the police chase of a gang of four armed robbers, found a good use for the pistol which he carried and brought down one. miscreant who was finally despatched by one of the Chinese constables who had given chase with Considerable courage and engaged in running Aght with the gangsters. The dangers which Mr. Vurm and the policemen ran are sufficiently shown by the disclosure that the dead man had emptied his pistol before being shot.
