Modern Water Tube

Boilers — Interesting Lecture Given To Engineering Society

Mr. C. W. Johnson was the speaker at the Engineering Society of China under the auspices of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, China branch, at a meeting at the Park Hotel yesterday when he delivered a paper on "Modern Water Tube Boilers. Mr. G. Pickering occupied the chair.

The paper dealt with the development of water tube boiler plant oyer the period of the last 10 or 15 years; attention was drawn to the tendency to higher pressure temperature clu ing this development period which, commencing with improvement to render feed water suitable for the higher pressure and temperatures, led on to the introduction of air heaters, new designs of boilers and superheaters, pulverized' fuel, improvement in mechanical stokers, also various forms of water cooled furnaces, all to meet the ever-growing demands of users for higher efficiencies.

Various slides were shown indicating typical and modern arrangements of different types steam generators to meet various conditions and accessory plant associated therewith described.

The matter of pulverized fuel firing and mechanical stoker development, also the development of water cooled furnaces, was dealt with in fair-detail. Difficulty in burning low value coals was touched on and the statement made that the solution to burning low value coals was a hot furnace the design of which and the means of attainment were discussed.

A new suggestion was made as to how to determine the advantages or otherwise of the complication of higher pressures and temperatures with the various steam generator designs of many countries when applied to various sizes of plant.

The paper also dealt with the development in marine work and separately with automatic control. The Paper concluded with a reference to conditions to be considered in relation to the China market.
