London, July 17.
Immediately the foreign exchange market opened to-day Paris started selling francs. After a few minutes there "vere no buyers, the rate rapidly weakening until sterling was quoted at 132,68 francs.
The British and French Authorities then stepped into the market by selling sterling and buying francs. The movement was assisted by weekend bear covering until finally the franc was brought back to 132 to the pound There appears to be a general malaise among the Paris financial community, which is nervous about the present political position in France.
Among the rumours circulating are a split in the Cabinet, resignation of M. Bonnet, the Minister of Finance, and introduction of exchange controls. Furthermore, the action of the French -Authorities in allowing the frane to weaken so rapidly has done nothing to allay the existing nervousness.—Reuter.
