One day, however, while patrolling off New York the Calgarian captured a steamship bound down the coast. She was flying American colours, yet really was one of the German internees which had escaped. We placed aboard her one of our officers and an armed prize party who were to take her into Halifax.
From the first it was realized that this was going to be no happy yachting trip, and the prize officer had been cautioned against any tricky business on the part of the disappointed Germans.
"In spite of his watchfulness, they "put it across" him. During the night the Germans plotted to present the ship reaching Halifax. She had on board enough coal to reach the Nova Scotian port, but it was not till the dark hours that the officer realized how exceptionally busy the engineering department had been in dumping "ashes" overboard.
These "ashes" were perfectly good coal. He doubted it she would get further than the Nantucket Lightship.
