Elliot hit up a breezy 17, but it was left to the tail to keep their ends up while Pote-Hunt, who had opened the innings, collared the attack. He played a masterly in-mings for his team and was finally last out with an excellent 65, which was the result of beautiful stroke play, particularly fine timing and extraordinary patience. He never looked troubled and played all the bowlers opposing him with the greatest of ease, scoring round the wicket with delightful fluency. He "was a trifle slow in the early stages of his innings, but when set, moved at a much faster pace, his runs being secured in a little under two hours. He was finally caught by Eatwell off Cheney and the Nomads were all out for 169—a much higher figure than at one time appeared possible.
Shaforce began ute well, Glenister, Jones and Manners adding good scores at a fair-rate and though Cole, Cheney and Sadler did not come off as well as had been anticipated, when halt the side had been sent back to the pavilion for 116, it seemed that the servicemen were in 'a very good position for the points. But the. next two wickets fell for only another 11 runs and though the eighth partnership was broken up at 145 after the addition of 18 more, it appeared at this stage of the game that Leach's Nomads would snatch a close victory, but Eatwell, who had come in at the fall of the third wicket, was playing exceptionally well after a shaky start—he was missed before he was 20—and with good support from Moores, the 169 mark of the Club was passed.
