Chungking, June 3.
Chungking will, -in future, be divided into a number of small municipalities, each specializing in the development of industry, commerce or education in accordance with a set plan, today declared General Ho Kuo-kwan, Mayor of Chungking.
"This," he added, "is the best way to reduce the risk of a wholesale destruction by air-laids of lives and property. in Chungking, and, at the same time, maintain the importance of the city as the war-time capital of China."
According to the project under consideration, the municipality of Chungking may extend over a much wider area than it does now, and will probably include all neighbouring towns and districts.
The Mayor is confident that, with a rational distribution of Government offices and key industries to surrounding districts, the "political, economic, industrial and cultural importance of Chungking will be randemed unassailable by Japanese air-raids."
Numerous towns around Chungking will form the nucleus of Chungkings future small municipalities, while the population of the city itself will be limited to 200,000 people.—Reuter.
