Surroundings The setting for the garden party of the American Women's Club yesterday was perfect. In the beautiful garden, with its borders of mixed spring flowers, an "old-fashioned garden", as Americans at home used {o call it, the Fourth Marine Band played to the assembled guests at the home of Mrs, R. T. Bryan, Jr, at 87 Amherst Avenue. In the receiving line were Mrs. E. Harrison King, the acting president of the American Women's Club, Mrs. Wilber Judd, the newly elected President, and Mrs. Walter Palmer, the recently elected Vice. President, Mrs, Harrison King looked charming in a long flowing flowered gown of red roses on white georgette. Mrs. Judd's gown was a long flowing lavender net, with a tucked highnecked bodice, and an intriguing applique of lavender organdie around the skirt. Dark blue net embroidered with scattered bunches of red flowers was the gown that had been chosen by Mrs. Palmer.
As usual the garden party was a real fashion parade. Flowered gowns of many different materials seemed to predominate, and harmonized with the background of the garden. Since the hour of the garden party had been fized at 430 p.m., it was possible for quite a number of the husbands to come with their wives. Mrs. Milton Helmick wore a lovely gown of pink land green embroidered white organdie and a large leghorn hat to complete the ensemble. Near her was seated Mrs. Richard P. Butrick in a pink lace costume. Mrs. John S. Service, {he recently elected Recording Secretary of the Amer in Women's Club. was dressed in a blue dress with a touch of colour in her red hat. Several other members of the Consulate were present, and later Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Sawyer and Mr. Butrick arrived. Mrs. O. C. Lockhart was also in the group.
Among the former presidents of the American Women's Club was Mr. J 1, Lunt, Mrs, M. F. Allman assisted Mrs. Bryan and Mrs. M. Guss at the tea table. Mrs. Weber and Mrs. Rodgers were at the unch and food tables, Dr. and Mrs. J. L. Caughey were seen among the guests, and Dr. and Mrs. D. E. Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Carleton Lacey, Mrs. R. E. O'Bolger end Mss. R. C. Beebe, Mr. and Mrs C. L. Boynton were among the later arrivals with Miss Eleanor Hinder and Mi Viola Smith.
Various guests were also present, Dr. and Mrs. Harley McNair, of the University of Chicago, came with Professor and Mrs. Donald Roberts to see old Shanghai friends. Mrs. Mc-Nair perhaps is better known as Florence Ayscough. From the British Women's Club there were several guests—Mrs. J. S. Whitney, Mrs. Lancelot Giles, Mrs. W. Warburton, and Mrs. Claude Ivory, Mrs. E. Kann, and Dr. and Mrs. A. Grossman represented the Danubian Women's Club while Miss Unterberger and Mrs. J. W. P.
