Refugee Ships at Woosung

Held Up by Incéssant Sévet® Fighting Thousands of refugees waited at the Kinglienyuan Wharf on the French Bund in vain yesterday for the arrival of three ships which have been chartered specially to transport them to Ningpo.

The vessels, s, Hsin Peking, s. Ningshing and s. Shun Foh, which have been on the Shanghai-Ningpo run carrying refugees, were expected to return to Shanghai from Ningpo yesterday morning to take additional refugees to the latter city.

As the vessels reached the vicinity of Woosung at about 6 am. the fighting was so severe that they had to seek immediate shelter. Incessant gunfire kept on by Japanese men-of-war and Chinese artillery © and machine-guns prevented the ships from entering Whangpoo.

was reported yesterday afternoon that the steamers are not expected to arrive here until this morning.
