Still greater improvement in the cultivation and marketing of sponges will, it is hoped, follow investigations now being made in the Bahamas by a group of British scientists working for the Sponge Fisheries Investigations Department.
The group is headed by Dr. H H. Brown, of Glasgow, who has as assistants Dr, Walton Smith, of London, and Dr. Leslie Smith, of Liverpool.
This is the first scientific inquiry on the subject to be carried out in the Bahamas, and it is hoped that the experiments will provide information for marine projects in other parts of the Empire.
The sponge industry here is now recovering from a severe slump caused chiefly by poor markets in the past two years.
