Upon their arrival in Shanghai the Durhams were temporarily commanded by Major E. T. Heslop, pending the arrival of Lt.-Col. W. A. Grey Wilson, who was indisposed at the time of their departure from England The Regiment, although its duties: were arduous, found time to invade the sporting arena in the city, and they quickly established a repulation in keeping with the traditions of ionner British Regiments who bad been stationed here.
In their first sporting encounter in Shanghai—a hockey match with the Shanghai Hockey Club—the soldiers triumphed to the tune of three goals to nil, and a few days later the Regimental football team, after having most of the play, earned a draw with the Sokol F.C. in their first Soccer game in the city. These encounters augured well for the future of the Durhams in the world of sport, although it was felt that the Battalion Rugby team would be unable to lower the colours of the redoubtable Welch Fusiliers, who were unassailable in local standing.
In a preliminary encounter between the two Regiments, the Fusiliers "A" team defeated a similar Durham side, but Rugger fans began to sit up ana take notice when the Durhams first XV. polished off the leading civilian clubs, and the fixture between the soldiers was eagerly awaited. Thel match materialized on January 15 this. year and the Durhams not only gained great victory by the score of 9 points to nil, but carried off the Rugby championship of Shanghai, as well.
