Envoy's Return Approved

Although official comment is with: held, officials of the State Department to-day manifested great pleasure at the reported return to the Embassy in Nanking of Mr. Nelson r. Johnson, the United States Ambassador.

It was pointed out that Mr. Johnson had the State Department's full support and sympathy in taking refuge temporarily on board a gunboat, but officials had been deeply conscious of the resentment which the step had aroused in certain quarters in China and' the United States.

Japan's warning to the foreign envoys to evacuate Nanking is an action "which, for impertinence, hits. an all-time high," says the "Daily News" in an editorial to-day.

"The reply of the foreign Powers would seem obvious," the journal continues, "Acting in concert, their answer should have been a flat refusal to scuttle."
