Servant Problem

Further proof of the paternalism of Government is shown in the mission to which. Mr. Ernest Brown, Minister of Labour has set himself, nothing less, in fact, than to solve the domestic servant problem. He has been touring the country to learn all possible aspects of the problem, and has interviewed dozens of would-be employees es and un-would-be maids.

At Leamington he addressed the girls of a domestic training centre on the text of the words "servant" and "service." Why, he asked, should these be-thought'to imply a stigma? They were two of the grandest words "in English and when a Cabinet meeting was held, the formula was "A meeting of His Majesty's servants will be held," etc. But somehow you cannot persuade the girls that "what is sauce for the Cabinet gander mary goose. It t sort of service.

Hak fromchis tour Mr. Brown has all sorts of ideas that he wil fud a solution. Does that mean that he will ünd us maids? There are 34 domestic training centres in the country but they are far from full. Possibly due to the revival of' industry, the number of girls who want io train for service has heavily fallen off. For say what you may as to the greater financial advantages of service, which are a fact, it is more attractive to most girls than domestic work, Needless to say Mr. Brown has received hundreds of letters, and hundreds if not thousands more have been published. So he does not lack @dvice, nor cooks (excluding of course the type we all want) to stir his "Sins of Our Aunts"

There is absolutely nothing new to be said on this subject. We, -are suffering for the sins of our fathers, or shall we say our aunts, who paid their maids very badly and worked
