Fair for the Game

Mile. Lolly Vagliano won the British Girls' Open championship for France last month. She beat Miss Peggy Edwards, 18, of Manchester, the holder, by the decisive margin of 5 and 4 in the final at Stoke Pages.

Mile. Vagliano, who is 16, is eligible to compete for the title for another two years, and as her game is likely to become stronger and more polished, it is extremely likely that the championship will remain in France for this period, relates George Greenwood in the "Daily Telegraph."

Only once Before has a French girl won the title. This was in 1924 when Mile. Thion de lo Chaume, now Mme. Rene Lacoste, beat Miss Dorothy Pearson. Three years later Mile. de la Chaume won the British championship, again beating Miss Pearson in the final.

Mile. Vagliano comes of golfing stock, her father being a former French champion and her mother twice runner-up for the women's title. Sonia, a younger daughter, and a son, who have also inherited their parents' love and flair for the game, give promise of eventually becoming players of the championship class.

The new champion, who is still at school, is sitting for an examination which, if she passes, will enable her to study for one of the professions suitable for women.

As I foreshadowed, Mile. Vagliano's powerful long game'was the principal factor in ner success, From ihe tee she overwhelmed her opponents, who were often playing the second shot from 40 to 50 yards behind.

No matter how good the short game may be there comes a time when the fact of being constantly out driven by the length of a street has a demoralising effect on one's game. Mile. Vagliano proved the truth of this over and over again.

It was clearly demonstrated in the semi-final against Miss May Love, of Paisley. The Scottish girl held her own to the turn and then Mile.

Vagliano drove the tenth green to get a 3. She followed with a 2 at the lith winning both holes, to become two up.
