MODERN TYPES OF MERCHANDISING

Paper cups for juicy sandwiches, to keep hands and clothes clean, a soapless powder for washing dishes without mop or rag, new uses.for cellophane, and new food combinations were exhibited at the convention of the National Food Distributors" Association in Chicago recently.

In fact the American housewife is becoming accustomed to new packages and interesting novel displays at the corner grocer's because of the tremendous growth in the last few years of the "wagon jobber." He is the man who jumps into his truck with three or four food prodücts. spins around to his list of retail grocers and not only sells the food, but builds up a new window display.

The food distributor or "wagon jobber" first appeared about ten years ago at the time when mayonnaise was being put into glass jars and other perishable foods were coming into the grocery stores of the country, it was explained. People at that time said that it was just a fad and that soon retail grocers would be ordering as before from the wholesale dealer.

Now, however, the distributor arrives once or twice a week with his three or four specials. If the grocer does not need any replenishments the jobber looks around and finds a better way of displaying the stuff he left last time. He brings the products "out from behind the counter," puts them up on a new display card, or arranges them attractively in a new place, and the next week they are all sold and the grocer wants more.

Noodles, macaroni, spaghetti, candy, nuts, mayonnaise, cheese, potato chips, most of them now in cellophane bags, are displayed prominently to promote sales.
