Engineer's Part In Management

In his position as chief administra-for, it is essential that he shall not be biased towards a particular department to which he might have been associated earlier in his career. His functions as head of an organization is to ce-ordinate the specialist's undertaking.

The part taken by the engineer in vary the administration was also reviewed. It was pointed ọut that most engineers at some stage of their career have been called upon to add administrative responsibilities to their daily tusk, and that, on the average, a well educated individual possesses an ability for administration before he diš- acquires the knowledge of technology through which to express it, and particularly some time before he is called upon to exercise any Executive responsibility. Many engineers have foreseen their possibilities and have attained success in the administrative field; the engineer however must realize that the policy for the qualified engineer to assume the duties of management when vacancies in the executive positions -occur is by no means an unalterable law, and while the training of the engineer, and his specialized knowledge on the specific industry with which his organization is concerned may specially qualify him for the executive position, it is not always that the engineer is the man selected, but the man who has proved his ability whether he be an engineer or comes from outside the technology of the engineer. The real danger of the engineer losing ground in promotion to administrative positions is the limiting of the outlook of the engineer to his highly specialize ed profession, and a. failure to embrace the more comprehensive outlook needed by the administrator which may be more easily attained by those occupied in lither duties of the industrial field.

No engineer today who has ambition to take his part in administration can indifference the attaining executive promotion, neither can the rely solely on his specialized education, training issd experience to bring promotion to ad-auf ministrative posts is very necessary for the engineer, both those commencing their career as well as those with many years of experience, to qualify themselves by a study of administration.
