Apropos the naming of an inn "The Belisha Beacon" I commented not long ago on the dearth of licensed houses with names derived from motoring, or indeed from any modern activity. Judging by the inn signs on show at the Brewers' Exhibition, this deficiency is going to be rectified in the future.
Many of the signs were distinctly modern, both in choice of subject and in treatment, and I notice several designed to appeal to the motorist, The Tired Tyre, for instance, showed a car's rear wheel with flattened tyre, adjoining a tempting tray of drinks. Another, the Turn Inn, featured a red direction indicator pointing the way of escape from a nasty night A third, called the Roundabout, gave an aerial view of a road junction.
Other modern titles were the Happy Landing and the Highflyer (both illustrated by a seaplane), the Lambeth Walk and the Listen Inn, the last with a modernistic design of clefs and key signatures.
