Considerable interest had been evinced earlier in the season of splitting the strength of the leading teams and holding but one league, thereby providing for closer competition, but this idea was ruled out on the basis that for the promotion of the standard of play, it was desirable to retain the grading of leagues. It was decided only to have one round to the competition in each league, and teams will only play each other once. This will take the leagues into the middle of February, and championship matches will command interest in March unless the knockout tournament can be crammed in between.
Interest in first division matches will be concentrated on the meeting of the first strings of the various senior Clubs. The Country Club will have H. K. Cassels, the Race Club either M. Benavitch, W. A. Welch or L. H. Wade, the Foreign Y.M.C.A. D. Green, the Columbia Country Club L. D. Carson, and the Rowing Club probably W. Neugebauer. There is little to choose between these, except for the last named who has been brought into the leading position in his team in the absence of E. J. regulations, which in a general way are:—the course is open only to members and servants, each of whom must have a pass; no photographs may be taken and members must remain within the club premises; all must return to the Settlement boundaries by 7 p.m. and motorists must follow a prescribed route, which begins at the Naval Landing Party Headquarters and then follows Kiangwan Road
