Sr. Azana May Settle In Madrid, Valencia Perpignan, Jan. 22.
The Spanish President Sr. Manuel Azana, left Barcelona for an unknown destination today, it was learned from Republican quarters here this evening.
He may settle either in Valencia or Madrid, where the whole of the Republican Government will also establish anew their offices, it was stated.
The Republican Command has already set up a defence system on the heights round Barcelona similar to that which defended Madrid shortly after the outbreak of the now 30- month-old civil war. Thousands of men are busy building the defence works in the city's suburbs, it was stated.
French residents of Barcelona seeking refuge here revealed that the famine in that town was growing worse wita the continual inflow of war refugees from districts newly fallen into Nationalist hands.—Havas.
