Panama, Nov. 16. How the British liner Mataroa (12390 tons) on her way from England to New Zealand, succeeded in escaping a U-boat after a 50-minute chase, was told on the liner's arrival here, The submarine was sighted when* it came to the surface two-anda-half miles off the Mataroa, The captain immediately swung round the ship, putting the U-boat astern, and ordered full steam ahead. The chase lasted until the submarine was left about seven miles behind, when she gave up.
The Mataroa is defensively armed, but the captain said he was under orders not to fire unless attacked.—Reuter, Rome, Nov. 15.
