Two factors have contributed to the recent development of Australian airways, The first was the systematic distribution of mail subsidies in 1934. The other was the admission of American machines. For some years American machines were not granted Australian certificates of airworthines, but once the technical difficulties were overcome it was soon realized that American machines were more suitable for Australian conditions than any European types available, Most Australian airlines are now using Douglas, Lockheed or Stinson machines for passenger services, and they have proved both satisfactory and popular because of their high speed and reliabi The Empire Airmail Route to England will be continued with British machines, but the new flying boats will be introduced on this route in a few months' time.
During the Christmas holiday season air passenger traffic reached record figures. In two days 750 passengers left Melbourne Airport alone, and they were carried a total distance of 30,000 miles. Similar activity was reported from other States, and larger machines are being introduced to cope with the steadily increasing business.
