No Headway

in Canton, they were met by Dr. Tso, Director of Public Health of the Provincial Government of Kwantung, who at first said that he had nothing to do-with the doctors, but later received a telegram from Dr. Hong Liu, instructing him to keep the doctors temporarily at the Army Medical College; "pay covers maintenance." For the next fortnight, however, the doctors could make no headway nor find any work, being put off on one excuse and another.

Then, at 11 pin. on January 7, they were asked to proceed to Hongkong the next morning, as Dr. Hong Liu would meet them there. They did so, but were met by Dr. Ettinger, who, Dr. Erben states, told the doctors that the "whole thing was off" and offered them their passage money back to Vienna, The doctors, however, objected, pointing out that they were all university-trained men and had given up good positions to come out to China to do actual work and instruct junior officers, Eventually, Dr. Gottfried, a prominent urologist in Europe, decided to accept a previously turned-down offer from Batavia while Doctors Router, Fuchs and Winkler decided to go to America. The other three, however, refused to leave, and while Dr. Milch went to Canton, the other two proceeded to Shanghai and Hankow respectively.
