Shansi Native Banks

In his article on "The Rise and Decline of the Shansi Native Banks" Mr. W. K. Yang states—the banking business in Shanghai has a history of nearly 200 years. The development of the native banks may be conveniently divided into four period: 1. Origin—during the reign of Emperors Chia Ching and Tao Kuang (1796-1850) 2. Development—during the reign of Emperors Hsien Feng and Tung Chi (1851- 1874). 3. Prosperity—in the reign of Emperor Kuang Hsu up to the Boxer Rising to the establishment of the Republic (1900-1911).

As to their future development the writer concludes, it all depends upon whether the bankers will decide to swim with or against the current of modern banking.
