Sometimes, of course, appearances go the other way, and a shabby exterior cannot always be regarded as an. indication of poverty, I am told by a social worker here that not all our refugees are so down-and-out as their sartorial effects would lead one to suppose, and that some of the former industrial and farmer people have small fortunes sewn up in their clothes, while the pants seem to be the favourite safe deposits, Of some of this wealth we shall never know, and it is none of our business, but one poor old lady was, she felt, on the point of death, so she confided to a foreigner who was in charge of certain offices concerned with the camp that, when she died he was to examine her clothing, and in the pants would be found $50 which she requested be spent upon her funeral, The poor dear could paid $8 a month for a room, the same accommodation soared: to $20 a month, House landlords were not reaping the benefit of these raised charges, but the families who rented the houses and were willing to sublet were, exploiting the present di tressing situation In addition to the high rentals matters were unsatisfactory since the neighbourhoods and the rooms were sordid and unhealthy both for bodies and minds of occupants, For some time the Society has wished to cope better with this problem of housing, and the new home, which is airy, pleasantly situated, and spacious, meets the difficulty admirably, and much credit must go Hardman and her helpers for their efforts in this direction. The occupants, women and children, highly appreciative of their new quarters, and the effect this better environment will have, particularly upon the young minds, can scarcely be estimated.
So two purposes have been served in this excellent move: an economy in rentals has been effected, and the scheme provides much more happily for those distressed who are dependent upon the K.D.S.
