Consul-General and Mr. C. E Gauss, U.S. Consul-General, it was learned yesterday. The protests referred to the probable censorship of British and American mails by the Japanese, and in both instances full rights were reserved on behalf of their nationals by the respective consuls-general.
Censorship of mails was expected to begin this morning following the visit of Japanese censors at the Post Office in North Soochow Road on Friday. The call was made at 9.30 a.m. when 21 Japanese entered room No. 20 on the second floor of the main building, which had been prepared for them. Altogether 22 Japanese will undertake the work.
