Chinese Withdrawal

Hankow, Dec. 26 The fall of Hangchow is virtually admitted in Chinese reports received here to-day, which state that the main body of the Chinese defenders withdrew from the city on the night of December 23. The last train from Hangchow, the reports add, left the city on the morning of December 24. It was packed with refugees.

The lakeside city, Chinese sources state, is a picture of desolation at present. The steel bridge across the Chientang River, they say, been dynamited; all the streets in the city are barricaded, while canoes, which are usually filled with tourists on sight-s g tours around the lake, are at present tied up, with no caretakers in scores of them.—Reuter.
