An exhortation to General Chiang

Spokesman on Chiang's Dream

Kai-shek and the Chinese forces to awaken from their dream of recapturing any point held by the Japanese forces in China was pronounced by a Japanese military spokesman at the press conference in Shanghai yesterday.

The statement was made during a description of fighting in Southern Kwangsi, in the Nanning area, where. the spokesman said, Japanese operations were nearing their end. Chinese forces, he said, had been trapped on the Pingyang and Wuming Plains and had suffered "annihilating losses."

In order to make clear the Japanese attitude in connection with the taking of any more Chinese territory, the Japanese commander-in-chief had had posters exhibited in the towns of Pingyang and Kutang inviting the Chinese forces to recuter after the Japanese had withdrawn, the spokesman said.

The. posters pointed. out that the taking of Pingyang and Kutang were final points in stopping the Chinese effort to recapture Nanning, The Japanese forces, the spokesman went on, were now on their way back to thei bases after driving the Chinese forces from these two places, "Inasmuch as the Japanese do not intend to hold on to territory in this area, these two towns will handed over to the forces of General Chiang Kai-shek. It is hoped that Chiang's troops will again advance towards Nanning for if they do another Wattle will take place with the same results," the posters stated according to the spokesman.

He added that the Japanese commander-in-chief had paid his respects to the Chihese who had lost their lives in the engagements at Pingyang aid at Kutang. The Japanese forces would be withdrawn from the Pingyang and Wuming Plains when their work of driving out Chinese troops ín this area had been accomplished, he. continued.

The Japanese policy, he concluded, was to shorten the front lines. This Was the reason the Japanese forces were withdrawing from towns captured in the Pingyang area and also in Suiyuan,
