London Calling!

Correct Wave-lengths and Times for Daventry News

There is a thrill in listening to a vigorous and well-known speaker, familiar with his subject and inspired by its significance, that can never be reproduced either by the printed word or the spoken summary of speech. Such is the difference between the stage play and its screen counterpart, and to the radio listener between a short-wave transmission and a long-wave reproduction of it.

To one recently out from home, accustomed to tuning-in on' a speech by Chamberlain, Churchill or Greenwood, the tones of Big Ben, or a Tchaikovsky symphony by the B.B.C. orchestra, the short-wave transmissions from Britain have a compelling attraction. It is, perhaps, not generally known what improvements and simplifications have been made in the newer radio sets to attain accurate tuning and faithful reproduction. The old hair's-breadth calif bration has given way to a device which enables stations to be picked p with speed and certainty, and finding," which was once a test of patience and skill is now comparatively easy. To those, however, who possess any short-wave set, it will be of interest to know that, as a result of the usual seasonal changes, a slightly different range of frequent cies must now be used for optimum reception of Daventry transmissions in Shanghai.

Tabulated below are the frequent cies and wavelengths which give the best reception at the present time, those in heavy type being better than the rest:—Wave-Local Time Frequency length 7.30 a.m.—9.00 a.m. 9.15 mes. 31.55m. 3.00p.m—6.00 p.m. 15.31 mes. 19.60 m. 430 p.m—6.00 pin. 1528mes. 1986m. 1186mes. 2529m. 11.75 mes. 25.53m. 645pm.—8.00p.m. 2153mcs. 13.93m. 1779 mes. 16.86 m. 1518mes. 19.76 m. 645pm.—945p.m. 1L75mcs. 25.53 m. 10.00p.m.—12.45 a.m. 9-simes. 31.55m.
